Matthew 2:1-18 Sermon Notes

Introduction -  The Epiphany; Three Wise Men

The Rest of the Story -

The Gospel is the Good News of the Cross and Resurrection of Jesus Christ by which we become the Righteousness of God.

Three Responses to the News of Jesus:

1.  Troubled - King Herod

Matthew 2:3 - When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled.

It is Jesus who is the rightful King.  He owns us twice.  He created us and He redeemed us.

I Corinthians 6:19-20 - You are not your own, 20 for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.

2.  Apathy - Chief Priests and Scribes

Matthew 2:4 - And assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born.  They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea; ...

Apathy - lack of interest, enthusiasm or concern.

Matthew 25:40

3.  Joy - The Wise Men

Matthew 2:10 - When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy.

What did their joyful response look like?

1.  Worship - and they fell down and worshipped him.

One of the ways to settle my troubled heart is, heartfelt worship.

2.  Giving - Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh.

One of the ways I move out of apathy is giving - personal service and sacrifice.
