John 1:1-18 Sermon Notes

Intro - The Cosmic Christmas Story

John 1:1 -  In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

John 1:14 - And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth; we have beheld his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father.

John 1:17 - For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

The Two Types of Covenants - “What then is the ‘old covenant’ in contrast with the ‘new covenant’ in Christ?  It is not the whole of the Old Testament, because the covenants with Abraham and David are never called ‘old’ in the New Testament.   Rather, only the covenant under Moses, the covenant made at Mount Sinai is called the ‘old covenant’, to be replaced by the ‘new covenant’ in Christ.” (Systematic Theology, Wayne Grudem, p.521)

The World The Kingdom of God/Heaven

How do we become Children of God?

By Promise - We Receive and Believe.

Receive - lambano - receive, take hold of, acquire possession of

John 14:17 -  even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.

We have to know to receive.

Believe - pisteuo - faith, trust, to have confidence in, rely on,

in his name - the person and work of Jesus Christ.

Who He is and What He has done.
