Luke 4:14-21 Sermon Notes

Do You have a Life Verse?   A verse of Holy Scripture that guides your life.

The Life Verse of Jesus:

Luke 4:17-19 - 17 And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written, 18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, 19 to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.”

Several Observations:

1. The Mission of the Suffering Servant - This is considered by some scholars to be the 5th Suffering Servant Song in Isaiah

But This is not the Messiah they were seeking -

John the Baptist and Jewish Messiah Expectation

Matt 11:2-5

2.  The Spirit of the Lord is Upon Him - The Holy Spirit in-dwelt Jesus and is upon Jesus.

Luke 4:18 - “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me

The Holy Spirit in-dwelt Jesus as the Son of God and the Holy Spirit was upon Jesus for mission and ministry as the Messiah.

As it was for Jesus, so it is for us as Believers!

I am in-dwelt by the Holy Spirit for my benefit.  And He rests upon me for the benefit of others.

3.  Who is the focus of the Life Verse of Jesus?  Four groups - The Poor, the Captives, the Blind and the Oppressed.

Poor - lack, deficiencies?

Captive - dominates, beyond my self-control?

Blind - Cannot see, blind spot/side?

Oppressed - applies pressure, holds me down/back?

4. The Life Verse Stopped at “Lord’s Favor” - Jesus did not read, and the day of Vengeance of our God;

Why not?    all about reaching out with what is pleasing and acceptable to His Heavenly Father.
