I Corinthians 15:12-23 Easter Sermon Notes

I. The Context - Life without the Bodily Resurrection leads to

life by The Secular Worldview

Secular Worldview - viewing the World and living life without reference to God.

The Secular Worldview comes out in three ways:

1. They are Stuck in their Sin -

vs.17. you are still in your sins

2. Logically they think Death leads to eternal Damnation -

vs.18  those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished.

3. Emotionally they are Pitiful -

vs.19  are of all people most to be pitied

II. The Concept - First Fruits

I Corinthians 15:20 - 20 But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.

First Fruits -  aparche - refers to a first sample of an agricultural crop that indicates the nature and quality of the rest of the crop; therefore, Christ’s resurrection body gives a foretaste of what those of believers will be like. (ESV Study Bible note, p.2214)

III. The Contrast - Adam or Christ

I Corinthians 15:21-23 - 21 For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. 22 For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive.  23 But each in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, then at his coming those who belong to Christ

The Fall (Disobedience) of Adam brought death - Genesis 3, spiritual, relational and then physical and eternal death

The Obedience of Christ brings life - Resurrection Life

Salvation by Representation -  Either I am represented by Adam or I am represented by Christ.

22 For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive.

In - En - a preposition, a marker of a close personal association, in union with, joined closely to.    John 10:38 - that the Father is in me and I am in the Father.

How is someone “in” Christ?     By our response to the Gospel - Repent & Believe.

The Gospel is the Good News of the Cross and Resurrection of Jesus Christ by which we become the Righteousness of God.
