John 16:5-15 Sermon Notes

What does the Holy Spirit do?

John 16:8 -  And when he (The Holy Spirit) comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment.

Convicts - elencho - expose, reprove, convict, correct

Contrast the Condemnation of Satan with

the Conviction of the Holy Spirit  - a home in need of repair.

Three phases of the Holy Spirit’s New Management:

Insight - Note the change in pronouns.   They/you/him

John 16:9-11 - 9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; 10 concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; 11 concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.

  1. The Conviction of Sin - they

The Gospel is the Good News of the Cross and Resurrection of Jesus Christ by which we become the Righteousness of God.

2.  The Conviction of Righteousness - you

Righteousness - dikaiosyne - to cause to be in a right relationship with

Two sides of one coin:

One side - the complete forgiveness of all our sin.

I John 1:9 - If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Colossians 2:13-14 - 13 And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, 14 by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross.

Other side - the Righteousness of Jesus Christ.

Isaiah 61:10 - he has covered me with the robe of righteousness

Romans 3:21-22 - the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the Law, although the law and the prophets bear witness to it, the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe.

Romans 4:3 - Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness.

II Corinthians 5:21 - For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

Final Scene of Star Wars (1st Trilogy)

3.  The Conviction of Judgment - the ruler of this world

I John 5:19 - We know that we are from God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.
