John 6:59-69 Sermon Notes

Intro - “Wey, I am offended by that!”

John 6:60-61 - 60 Many of his disciples, when they heard it, said, “This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?” 61 But Jesus, knowing in himself that his disciples murmured at it, said to them, “Do you take offense at this?

I Corinthians 1:22-23 - 22 For Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom, 23 but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block (offense) to Jews and folly (moronic) to Gentiles,

1.  People out in the World find the Words of Jesus Offensive:

Self Denial - Luke 9:23 -  And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.

Money - Luke 18:22 - When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “One thing you still lack. Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.”

Family - Luke 14:26 - “If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple.

Marriage - Mark 10:6-9 - But from the beginning of creation, ‘God made them male and female.’ ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.”

Salvation - John 14:6 - Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

2.  People out in the World find the Work of Jesus Offensive:

The Gospel is the Good News of

the Cross and Resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Too Exclusive - One must believe in me only.

Too Easy - One only must believe in me.

Another Response?   Yes, we can Believe and come to Know

John 6:68-69 - 68 Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life; 69 and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.”

How do I grow from Immature to Mature Believer (Believing/Knowing) ?

Who are we listening to?

John 6:60 - 60 Many of his disciples, when they heard it, said, “This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?”

John 8:43,47,    John 10:27,    John 18:37

Conclusion - the biblical Jesus is offensive.  The call is to set aside the offense and listen to Jesus anyway.    Why?
