Luke 14:25-33                                     Sermon Notes

Becoming a Disciple of Jesus - he issues three prohibitions.

Disciple - machetes - a learner, apprentice, one who learns by instruction from another.

Three Prohibitions -

No one may become a Disciple unless they:

1.  Hate Their Own Family -

Luke 14:26 - “If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple.

2.  Carry Their Own Cross -

Luke 14:27 - Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple.

3.  Renounce All Worldly Possessions -

Luke 14:33 - So therefore, any one of you who does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple.

He makes these radical statements and issues these impossible prohibitions to bring us to our knees, in repentance - the first step into the New Covenant of Grace.

The Old Covenant of Law The New Covenant of Grace

Law - I need a Savior! Grace - Thank God for Jesus!

The Grace Perspective:   To Build and Battle

Luke 14:28-32 - 28 For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it? 29 Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, 30 saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish.’ 31 Or what king, going out to encounter another king in (battle) war, will not sit down first and deliberate whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand? 32 And if not, while the other is yet a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks for terms of peace.

What are the terms of peace with Jesus?

Switch Sides and Join Him to Build and Battle.

1.  Jesus Builds His Church.

Matthew 16:15-18 - … on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

The Gospel is the Good News of the Cross and Resurrection of Jesus Christ by which we become the righteousness of God.

2.  Jesus Battles Satan.

I John 3:8 - The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil.

I John 5:19 - We know that we are from God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.
