John 11:18-44 Sermon Notes

Intro - Life that leads to Resurrection

John 11: 25-26 - 25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, 26 and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die.

“What God made us to desire, and therefore what we do desire if we admit it, is exactly what he promises to those who follow Jesus Christ:  a resurrected life in a resurrected body, with the resurrected Christ on a resurrected Earth.” (Heaven, Randy Alcorn, p.7)

Present Heaven and future New Earth.

The Gospel is the Good News of the Cross and Resurrection of Jesus Christ by which we become the Righteousness of God.

We will receive His Resurrection because we have already received His Life.

Life - Zoe - Jesus and the Apostles are referring to eternal (John 3:16), spiritual (John 6:63) abundant (John 10:10), Resurrection (John 11:25) life.

Not Life - Bios

One of the great images that Jesus and the Apostles use to talk about this Zoe life is that of a seed.

I John 3:9 - 9 No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God’s seed abides in him; and he cannot keep on sinning, because he has been born of God.

John 11: 25-26 - Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, 26 and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die.

“This is the great Christian declaration.  We have hardly grasped its significance.  We reply often, He is dead, She is dead.   We still talk that pagan way.   They are not dead.” (The Gospel According to John, G Morgan Campbell)

The Zoe Life is not interrupted by physical death.

What does “die” mean?   It means that, as Believers, physical death is not the end of our existence, but rather we are passing into the continued Zoe Life of Jesus Christ and into His presence.

Thief On the Cross -

Luke 23:42-43 — 42 And he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” 43 And he said to him, “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise.”

Apostle Paul to the Christians in Philippi.

Philippians 3:21,24 - For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. … My desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better.
