John 6:22-40 Sermon Notes

Intro - Food
John 6:35 - Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.

Context - Feeding of the 5,000, Walking on the Water, Jesus is speaking to unbelievers.

John 6:26 - Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you are seeking me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves.

1. I am the bread of life - zoe - not mere existence but quality of life.

not bios - existence, biological life in this world.

John 6:27 - Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life (Zoe), which the Son of Man will give to you.

Jesus is promising to give us, not eternal bios existence, but eternal Zoe life.

2. I am the bread of life - artos - food, any kind of nourishment.

Bread did not mean carbohydrates, it meant sustenance.
Bread - manna in the Exodus wilderness wanderings.

Exodus 16:14-15 — And when the dew had gone up, there was on the face of the wilderness a fine, flake-like thing, fine as frost on the ground. 15 When the people of Israel saw it, they said to one another, “What is it?” For they did not know what it was. And Moses said to them, “It is the bread that the Lord has given you to eat.

They were also told not to hoard it, save it, store it up.

Why not? Because it would spoil, go bad, be filled with worms and stink.

“There was something we grasped at, in the first moment of longing, which just fades away in the reality. …something has evaded us.” (“Hope” Mere Christianity, CS Lewis)

3. I am the bread of life - Jesus does not give the bread of life, He is the Bread.

John 6:35 - Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.
