Perspective of the Apostle Paul in the New Testament:
Jesus lives and gives the life of Grace.
Paul receives and explains the life of Grace.
Emotional State based on circumstances vs.
Eternal Status based on the Truth of the Gospel.
State - the particular condition that someone is in at a specific time; mental/emotional/physical. (Google/www.merrian-webster.com)
State is a continuum, many small gradations of difference
Status - the position/standing/station of someone in relation to others; social, professional, national. (Google/www.merrian-webster.com). Status is Either/Or.
What brings about a Believer’s Status Change?
The Gospel is the Good News of the Cross and Resurrection of Jesus Christ by which we become the Righteousness of God.
The Status Change by the Holy Spirit — set their minds;
Our Mindset has been changed.
Romans 8:5 - For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.
Status - Flesh or Spirit. Either/Or
Mood - Not Imperative but Indicative
What is a Mindset? ‘Mind your own business!”
But the term includes not only the thought but the affections, emotions, desires and objects of pursuit. It is a comprehensive term(Romans 8:5-17, Dr. Martin Lloyd Jones, p.5)
The Mindset of the Flesh -
set their minds on the things of the flesh
What is the Flesh? Galatians 5:19-21 - Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, 21 envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these.
The Mindset of the Flesh is spiritually dead. Ephesians 2:5 - even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved

The Mindset of the Spirit -
set their minds on the things of the Spirit
Spirit, not spirit - Capital S is the reference is to the Holy Spirit not the personal spirit of a Believer.
What is the Mindset of the Holy Spirit? Jesus; who He is and what He has done - The Gospel, and what He will do - The Second Coming.
John 16:14 - He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you.
The Mindset of the Spirit is - Life
Romans 8:6 - For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.
Life - not bios but Zoe. Not religion but Newness of Life (Romans 6:4). Religion vs. Life - Flowers, Trees, a Baby
