Luke 17:1-19 Sermon Notes

Intro - Gratitude

Gratitude grows out of Appreciation.

Appreciation - the act of estimating the value, quality or significance of people and things.

"Appreciation, what I call packaged joy, is what happens when we unwrap joy gifts. These are the special moments; memories of people, interactions, sights, sounds, smells, textures, and tastes that spark a smile....In addition to packaged joy, we can feel gratitude and use thankfulness to" activate relational joy. (The Joy Switch; How Your Brain's Secret Circuit Affects Your Relationships - And How You Can Activate It, Chris M. Coursey, p.101)

Relational Joy grows out of Gratitude

Gratitude grows out of his appreciation. And relational joy, grows out of his gratitude.

They all called out for Mercy:

Luke 17:12-13 - 12 And as he entered a village, he was met by ten lepers, who stood at a distance 13 and litted up their voices and said, "Jesus, Master, have mercy on us."

Mercy - eleeo - to show kindness or concern for someone in serious need.
(Or) Mercy - I don't get what I deserve.

Life can be very hard, but Jesus is always good.

Luke 17:14 - 14 When he saw them he said to them, "Go and show yourselves to the priests." And as they went they were cleansed.

Then comes the appreciation. Right? But it was only one.

Luke 17:15-16 15 Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice; 16 and he fell on his face at Jesus' feet, giving him thanks.

Relational Joy - The assurance of salvation.

Luke 17:19 - 19 And he said to him, "Rise and go your way; your faith has made you well

Made you well - Sozo - rescue from danger, restore to a former state of safety and well being, to deliver, salvation.

How do we apply this principle?

Thanks - eucharisteo - to be thankful on the basis of a received benefit, to be grateful.

"We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, and we offer these gifts." (2019 BCP, p.133)

We thank you for feeding us with the spiritual food
of the most precious Body and Blood
of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ:
and for assuring us in these holy mysteries
that we are living members of the body of your Son,
and heirs of your eternal Kingdom. (2019 BCP, p.137)
