Luke 10:38-42 Sermon Notes

Intro - Listening

Luke 10:41-42 - “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, 42 but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.”

What was the “good portion” that Mary chose?

Listening to Jesus

Luke 10:39 - And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to his teaching.

Listening to Jesus is:

1.  The call for Believers

Luke 9:35 - And a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is my Son, my Chosen One; listen to him!”

2.  The activity in the New Covenant of Grace,

not the Old Covenant of Law.

The Old Covenant of  Law is all about what we do.  The New Covenant of Grace is all about what Jesus has done, is doing and will do.

3.  In Context -  Believers in The Gospel

The Gospel is the Good News of the Cross and Resurrection of Jesus Christ by which we become the Righteousness of God.

4.  What happens when we do listen to Jesus?

We hear of the love/joy/peace He wants to give us.

John 3:16,  John 15:11,  John 14:27

5.  Not based on hard life circumstances.

As a matter of fact, hard life circumstances often soften our hearts to be more receptive to hearing Jesus.

How do we listen to Jesus?

By His Holy Spirit through His Holy Scriptures.

Spiritual Disciplines - Physical activities we do to open our spiritual hearts to receive His grace and love.

Meditation - Pray and Read an account of the life of Jesus.   Pray and Read one of His parables.    Where do I see myself in the account or parable?

What do I see?   Smell?  Taste?   Hear?  Feel?

Where is the Grace?   Where is Jesus?

Ex - Last Sunday -

Who are you in the story of the Good Samaritan?

Memorization - What bible verse do I have memorized in my heart?

Galatians 2:20 -   I have been crucified with Christ.   It is no longer I who live but Christ who lives in me.  And the life I live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God who loved me and and gave himself for me.
