Matthew 3:1-12 Sermon Notes

Intro - Repentance

Matthew 3:2 - “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

Repent - metanoia - meta (change) + noia (mind)

Religious Repentance - groveling in the dirt, condemning themselves until they have earned God’s forgiveness through their contrition.

Gospel Repentance - A change of mind/heart knowing that God has already forgiven me all my sin.

What brings someone to Repentance?

Religious Repentance is brought about by fear.

Matthew 3:7 - “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? 8 Bear fruit in keeping with repentance.

Gospel Repentance is brought about by kindness.

Roman 2:4 - knowing that God's kindness is meant to lead you to repentance

Where do we find the Kindness of God?   The Gospel

The Gospel is the Good News of the Cross and Resurrection of Jesus Christ by which we become the Righteousness of God.

Where do we find the Kindness of God?

The Forgiveness of All our sin!

Colossians 2:13 - 13 And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven (past tense) us all our trespasses, 14 by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross.

I John 1:7 - the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.

Romans 6:10 - 10 For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God.  11 So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.

Hebrews 10:10 - 10 And by that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

Holy Communion Prayer:

“In obedience to your will, he stretched out his arms upon the Cross and offered himself once for all, that by his suffering and death we might be saved.”  (2019 BCP, p.133)

Matthew 26:28 - this is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.
