Luke 9:18-24 Sermon Notes

Two Great Themes frame the Gospels -

Who Jesus is?   What did he come to do?

His Identity and His Purpose.

Luke 9:20 - But who do you say that I am?

Luke 9:22 - The Son of Man must suffer

1.  The Identity of Jesus - Peter answered, “The Christ of God.”

“Collective Illusions are social lies.   They occur in situations where a majority of individuals in the group privately reject a particular opinion, but they go along with it because they (incorrectly) assume that most other people accept it.  When individuals conform to what they think the group wants, they can end up doing what nobody wants.  This the collective illusion’s dark magic.” (Collective Illusions; Conformity, Complicity, and the Science of Why We Make Bad Decisions, Todd Rose, 2022, p. xv)

Social Desire - to go along and get along.

Luke 9:18 - “Who do the crowds say that I am?”

Luke 9:20 - And Peter answered, “The Christ of God.”

Story of Boss taking the Lord’s Name in Vain.

2.  The Purpose of Jesus - The Son of Man must suffer

Luke 9:22 - The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised.

Why must He suffer and be killed?

The Blood - The price to be paid for forgiveness of our sins

is the shedding of His Blood.

Hebrews 9:22 - and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.

Leviticus 17:11 - For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it for you on the altar to make atonement for your souls, for it is the blood that makes atonement by the life.

Colossians 2:19-20 - 19 For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.

The Rejection - be rejected by the elders and chief priests,

Jesus was the victim of injustice and oppression.

What happened on that Good Friday?    The the elders and chief priests and scribes stirred up the crowds to call for his crucifixion.

Luke 23:13, 22-24  - 13 Pilate then called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people  …  22 A third time he said to them, “Why? What evil has he done? I have found in him no guilt deserving death. I will therefore punish and release him.” 23 But they were urgent, demanding with loud cries that he should be crucified. And their voices prevailed. 24 So Pilate decided that their demand should be granted.

Jesus was the victim of injustice and oppression

because of the Collective Illusion.
