Luke 14:1,7-14 Sermon Notes

Intro - Being Humble

Luke 14:11 - 11 For every one who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

Humility - tapeinoo - to make low, embarrass, of low birth, modesty, to bring down.    Humility Latin - humus, ground, soil.

Voice of Verb - shows if the subject acts or is acted upon.

humbled - passive voice - acted upon

humbles himself - active voice - acts (proactively)

I Peter 5:6 - Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you

James 4:7 - Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

Philippians 2:8 - And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.

Issue of the Day - The Dinner Guests & Host

Guests were choosing the places of honor.

Host was inviting friends, family and rich neighbors.

But what did Jesus say?

Guests should chose the lowest place

Luke 14:10 - 10 But when you are invited, go and sit in the lowest place, so that when your host comes he may say to you, ‘Friend, go up higher’; then you will be honored in the presence of all who sit at table with you.

Host should invite the poor, maimed, lame & blind

Luke 14:13,14 - 13 But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind, 14 and you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you. You will be repaid at the resurrection of the just.”

Examples of Humbling Ourselves:

Believers - Repent after perceiving The Gospel

The Gospel is the Good News of the Cross and Resurrection of Jesus Christ by which we become the righteousness of God.

Not Knowing Everything - We lack understanding, that we want to gain more understanding.   I want to renew my mind, Rom 12:2, I want to gain the mind of Christ, I Cor. 2.

Not Doing Everything - to delegate, not do it themselves.  We are willing to trust someone else to also accomplish the task.

Encouraging Others - To encourage is not to flatter.  to compliment someone or encourage someone on something they have done, something they have said, means that I have observed them.

Serving Others -   to think of them, honor them, bless them, love them.

Mark 10:45 - For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
